21, 2006 Stonehenge Sold
On this day in 1915 Stonehenge was sold at auction to Mr. C .H .Chubb
for £6,600 as a present for his wife. Mr Chubb presented it to the
nation three years later 'as his wife didn't think it suited her.' ;o)

20, 2006 British phone books dating back to 1880 to go
online
The books run from 1880 (when phone directories were introduced) to
1984, when BT was privatized. The service is being run by British Telecom
and the genealogy website ancestry.co.uk to aid families and social historians
research the past.

Shakespeare's birthplace sold
On this day in 1847, the United Shakespeare Company bought the house
in which playwright William Shakespeare was born at Stratford Upon Avon
in Warwickshire for £3,000. It became the first building in Britain
to be officially preserved.

On this day in 1620, 102 men, women, and children set sail for
America from Plymouth in their ship 'The Mayflower', captained by Myles
Standish.

Christie born on this day in 1890
We have in stock several books by this author that are not yet listed
on the web site. Please contact

During 'Christie Week' in south Devon, a sale
of personal items from Greenway House, one of her favourite holiday
homes, raised £300,000. Only 10% of Christie's collection was up
for auction, the remaining 90% will stay at Greenway House. Half of the
proceeds of the auction will go to the National Trust to help open the
restored Greenway House to the public in 2008.

15, 2006 "Battle of Britain" Day
On this day in 1940, the largest concentration of enemy aircraft ever
seen came across the English coast from all directions. Within two days
of intense fighting Hitler realized that an invasion of Great Britain was
impossible.

14, 2006 The Man Booker Prize for fiction shortlist
announced
Have you read any of the six titles on the shortlist? David Mitchell,
the bookmakers favourite, failed to make the final six authors vying for
the £50,000 award as did Peter Carey, previous two-time winner. The
winner will be announced Oct. 10. The
Book Standard has short reviews of most of the nominated titles.

hours (when we are not working of course, ahem...) exploring this site
that features some of our favourite children's authors and their wonderful
books.

Between June 2003 and January 2006 the BBC asked the public to share
their memories of World War Two. This fascinating archive created from
their contributions has 47,000 stories and 15,000 images. Anglophile Books
has WWII
fiction and non-fiction books available.

A wonderful article about introducing children to the wonder of books
and the joys of reading. As one that doesn't have children, I've noticed
that cats don't seem to get past the babies and toddlers stage mentioned
in the article with very occasional forays into the books as tunnels, preschooler
realm.

The Quills celebrates the best books of the year in nineteen popular
categories, ranging from romance to biography to graphic novels. Maya
Angelou, Diana
Gabaldon, Frank
McCourt, Elizabeth
Peters, and Lauren
Willig are among those with books nominated this year. A link
to vote for your favourites, as well as information about the awards and
the nominated books located at the date link above. The awards will be
presented on October 10 and the ceremony will be broadcast by NBC in the
US on October 28.

Seven
Stories, the Centre for Children's Books, is housed in a Grade II-listed
former Victorian granary in Newcastle. It aims to explore and celebrate
children's literature by collecting and preserving the original artwork
and manuscripts of Britain's modern writers and illustrators.
